Each day is a journey.
We take one step at a time.
With friends to support us
On each challenge as we climb.
Whatever direction we go
And no matter what comes our way.
May our journey through life
Bring us happiness each day.
Most of these Sunday Snippet entries are pulled from one of two sources. Either I encounter a particularly poignant quote during my adventures through the Internet or I enjoy a particular passage in a book that I am reading. Today’s highlight is neither one of those. It’s not even attributed to anyone, as far as I can tell, as it came with a little trinket I received in the mail. It’s almost like it belongs on the inside of a greeting card, except it has nothing to do with a birthday, a graduation, or a wedding. Except it could have everything to do with any of those events.
This cute poem may seem cute and largely inconsequential on the surface, like the countless poems that populate many greeting cards, but we can glean several important life lessons from its humble eight lines. While they may sound obvious at first and while you may understand them on an intellectual level, it is another matter altogether to internalize their wisdom.
First, we have to remind ourselves to take one step at a time. You may be overwhelmed by the scope of a project, afraid to start because you feel like you’ll never finish. But when you break down that project into smaller steps, it can feel a lot more manageable. This could be anything from losing weight to saving to buying your first home. Take it one step at a time.
Second, we are not alone. When faced with the innumerable challenges of life, we may feel obligated to face them on our own. We may think less of ourselves when we ask for help. We may feel like we’d be a burden to others. But your friends and your family are there to support you, just as much as you are there to support them. We will go further together.
Third, the actual “direction” of our journeys ultimately doesn’t matter nearly as much as the journey itself. Don’t put too much weight on that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, because it will never live up to your lofty expectations. Instead, remember that life is a song and we should be singing, dancing and laughing all the way. Allow your journey to bring happiness every day.
Put another way:
There’s a voice that keeps on calling me.
Down the road is where I’ll always be.
Every stop I make, I’ll make a new friend.
Can’t stay for long, just turn around and I’m gone again.
Maybe tomorrow, I’ll want to settle down,
Until tomorrow, I’ll just keep moving on.
My Canadian readers should recognize that.
